Storage Management Costs

Fred Moore at www.horison.com is a good analyst of the directions of the storage marketplace. He is the source of this figure.

Research firm IDC's "Worldwide Hard Disk Drive 2005-2009 Forecast," shows that the number of drives shipped worldwide and the resulting profits should increase at a compound annual growth rate of 15.5 percent and 10.1 percent respectively from 2004 to 2009. This projection has proven true, however a little conservative.

Prospects for 1 and 2 terabyte drives using perpendicular magnetic recording are being touted by research firms familiar with the storage business.

While the cost of the storage decreases, the cost of managing the storage increases.  As shown in the figure, the non-mainframe management costs are increasing faster than the mainframe management costs.

We believe that this is due to the immaturity of a fast growth segment of the market where the temptation to add additional inexpensive storage space overshadows the total cost of ownership, which includes, time to locate and access data, time to backup and restore, and other management issues.

Further, the performance issues of things like access density, which looks at how much data there is under an actuator, have not yet emerged as driving forces in this segment of the market.

The capability of analyzing and acting upon information is a powerful storage management tool.  Check out FileWizard to see how it can help you.
